To get a clear idea of what kind of game Slender's Woods is and how it works, it is important to be at least a little aware of the history behind the game and how the story works. This 3-D game stands alone, but it is a part of a universe known as the Fear Mythos, where a creature known as the Slenderman hunts down people and destroys them in terrible ways. Slender's Woods uses that mythology and plunges you right in without an explanation, giving this game an interesting alien and brutal feel.

What Is It?

This free 3D game is based in the horror genre, and in many ways, it takes its cue from Slender: The Eight Pages, another game that is one of the cornerstones for Fear Mythos video games. In Slender, you run through the forest gathering up pages before the Slenderman can find you, but in Slender's Woods, you are in a similar environment, though the quest aspect has been dialed down a bit.

Two Mode

The place where Slender's Woods makes the biggest departure from the format laid out by Slender and replicated in many other games is in the two modes. There are two modes of gameplay that are available to you.

In Page Collecting Mode, you are in another version of Slender: The Eight Pages. You need to make sure that you collect a certain number of pages to survive to the end of the game.

You may choose to play in Story Mode. In Story Mode, the Slenderman is still chasing you, but instead of going through and collecting pages, you also need to run to certain goals to use certain items. There is puzzle solving involved, and over all, this is the more enjoyable mode to play in.

How Scary Is It?

If you are looking for a game set in the Fear Mythos universe, there is a good chance that you are someone who is invested in a good healthy scare. Though the game patterns off of the creepy Slender: The Eight Pages, the end effect is a little underwhelming. There are one or two startling moments, but the game never lives up to the terror of the original.

Gameplay

On the whole, this game is a great choice for people who are a fan of puzzles and of horror. There is a real tension that builds up as you try to solve a puzzle while realizing that the Slenderman is closing in, and game play is streamlined enough to be picked up. Some people state that the game is more challenging than Slender, but the game is by no means impossible. This is a good game to pick up for a light afternoon of scary fun.

Who Will Like It?

General horror fans might get a kick out of Slender's Woods, but the truth is that this game was designed by and for fans of the Fear Mythos.
